About My Girl Scout Gold Award Project

In Girl Scouts, girls can earn a total of three awards. Two of these awards, the Bronze and Silver Awards, are projects that my troop and I completed that benefit the community. This year, I have decided to complete the Girl Scout Gold Award. It is a solo project that girls complete within their junior or senior year that addresses a problem within the local community. If you are familiar with Boy Scouts, it is similar to the Eagle Scout Award. I chose to center my project on the impacts of hunger on local families and children. As I was thinking of potential projects, I remembered a continuous trend throughout elementary schools: I always had leftover snacks. What I never realized was that other students in my classes didn't have enough to eat and were left hungry. In my project, rather than throw away excess food after lunch, students considered donating unopened snacks, or packing extra in their lunches. Students then dropped the snacks in a bin located in the lobby according to their grade.
